Best underlayment for laminate is the one that stops the xylophone

Laminate doesn’t have to sound cheap. Most “tap-tap” floors are a pad problem, a flatness problem, or both. Here’s how to shop underlay like someone who has to live with the hallway at 6 a.m.

People ask for the “best” underlayment like there’s a trophy. There isn’t. There’s the best match: your laminate brand’s rules, your subfloor, your noise tolerance, and how long you want the cushion to still act like cushion.

What you’re shopping for

  • Support — locks shouldn’t work like hinges
  • Acoustics — less drum, less tick
  • Moisture — especially on concrete
  • Longevity — density so it doesn’t pancake in a year

If a pad only sells “cloud soft,” keep walking. Soft is easy. Durable quiet is harder.

Fiber, foam, cork, wood fiber—without the brand war

What thickness is best under laminate?

Whatever the laminate manufacturer allows—often in the 2–3 mm class for foam/fiber, with specific rules if pad is pre-attached. Thicker is not automatically better.

Will expensive underlay fix cheap laminate?

It can improve sound and feel. It will not invent a better wear layer or fix a wavy subfloor. Buy the floor you can live with, then pad it correctly.

Foam or fiber?

Fiber often wins on long-term sound and support. Quality foam can be fine. Bad foam is how laminate got its hollow reputation.
